Here’s how to make the most — and taste the most — during three days in this singular Southern California city.

Los Angeles, California, is a dream of Hollywood glam, Instagram-worthy architecture and sun-drenched shores. Dining in the city can be just as distinct, from classic haunts to haute spots to ethnic eateries.

Day 1: Downtown

There’s much to see in Downtown Los Angeles, a place GQ Magazine has called “the coolest new downtown in America,” from landmark architecture such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Bradbury Building to cultural institutions such as the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles and the California Science Center. Refuel after a walking tour at any number of popular multicultural dining destinations, including historic Olvera Street, Chinatown and Little Tokyo. Whether it’s a classic such as Philippe the Original (don’t miss the French Dip sandwich), a local favorite such as Border Grill (with creative Mexican fare) or an Italian hot spot such as Bestia, Downtown L.A. offers something for every palate.

Explore landmarks and attractions in Downtown Los Angeles, then refuel at any of the area's varied restaurants, including Italian hot spot Bestia.

Day 2: Hollywood

Hollywood is known as the entertainment capital of the world. Check out the theme park and working movie studio at Universal Studios Hollywood, or stroll the Hollywood Walk of Fame to pay homage to the industry’s stars. Want to get active? There are plenty of hiking options in the area, including Runyon Canyon and several trails in nearby Griffith Park. Afterward, take your pick of classic American menus, modern restaurants or other dining options. Head to Yamashiro for panoramic views of the city and Asian-fusion cuisine. Musso & Frank Grill is Hollywood’s oldest restaurant, known as much for its martinis as it is for its retro cuisine. Family-friendly restaurants include the Hard Rock Café on Hollywood Boulevard and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at Universal CityWalk Hollywood.

Day 3: The Coast

Los Angeles features more than 120 kilometers of gorgeous coastline, including some of the best beaches in the country. Exploring these stretches of sand is essential, whether you're taking a scenic drive alongside the Pacific Ocean or biking down coastal paths. Don’t call it a day without spending time at the amusement park at Santa Monica Pier. Afterward, grab a table at The Lobster, an award-winning seafood restaurant with 180-degree coastal views. Alternately, you could people-watch at bustling Venice Beach before dining at the upscale Tasting Kitchen or classic Joe’s Restaurant.
