Maine’s food trucks are redefining how locals and travellers think about dining.

Many of the trucks’ chefs rely on local ingredients, and each showcases a unique taste profile to satisfy diners — whether they’re craving adventure or “comfort food.” Bonus: Food trucks can be a cost-effective way to sample local flavors without depleting your travel budget. To find the following trucks, check social media and farmers’ market vendor line-ups, where food trucks tend to congregate.

Mainely Burgers

Head to Portland or Scarborough Beach for the two locations of this locally focused burger truck. Try the award-winning Mainah Burger with cheddar cheese, sliced apple, sautéed onions, bacon and maple syrup mayonnaise. Save room for truffle French fries or a side of crispy-fried Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

Love Kupcakes

This small enterprise is based in Portland, but the truck can often be found in Falmouth — just look for the pale green and pink 1960s travel trailer. Expect five or six flavors of cupcakes on offer each day (some featuring local ingredients like blueberries), plus vegan and gluten-free varieties. The moist vanilla cupcake with decadent vanilla buttercream frosting is Love’s best-seller.

Danny’s Dogs

Classic USA “comfort food” in the form of hot dogs, burgers, chili and potato chips keeps crowds flocking to this Brunswick institution. For more than 30 years, fans have raved about Danny’s steamed hot dogs, served on soft, fresh buns and topped with just enough mustard and onions.
