Golf and the Great Outdoors in Myrtle Beach

by Serena Lorien

It’s easy to see why Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations on the East Coast of America; this active, family-friendly escape offers 60 miles of stunning beaches and a variety of water sports to choose from. There are many outdoor activities and areas to explore, from state parks to golf courses and gardens – plenty of ways you can enjoy nature at its best.

Golf Paradise in Myrtle Beach

My round of golf today takes me along dense forests and marshland, and every now and then, I stop to take in the beautiful surrounding nature of the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. Surely one of the most beautiful golf courses in the region, it was voted one of the top 100 public courses in America by Golf Digest. The course’s landscape is carved out of coastal forest and the live oaks, and the thousands of flowers planted around the course make it a spectacularly beautiful place to play. After my game, I enjoyed a meal at the well-appointed clubhouse.

Another notable golf course is the Tidewater Golf Club. This course has received accolades as a best public course by both Golf Digest and Golf magazine. The views are just wonderful here, with a saltwater marsh and ocean inlet to the east, while the Intracoastal Waterway borders several holes on the north and west.

There are more than 100 championship golf courses in and around Myrtle Beach, which is why the area is a perfect destination for golf lovers.

Huntington Beach State Park

Another favorite outdoor spot, Huntington Beach State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. The park is located directly on the beach ¬– one of the reasons it is so popular among families. Home to more than 300 species of birds, this is also a prime spot for bird watching. You can also spot alligators in the park’s freshwater lake and fish off the pier. If you feel like staying for a while, camping sites are available, and you can stock up on any needed supplies at the park shop. Huntington Beach State Park is also the perfect place to hike or just bring a picnic to one of the picnic shelters and enjoy the peace.

Nature and Adventure on the Water

As a coastal city, there is certainly much to see and do on the water in Myrtle Beach. Choose from many eco-tours on the coast ¬– a truly amazing way to get close to dolphins, turtles and other marine wildlife. For a more active experience, why not try parasailing, water skiing, kayaking or standup paddle boarding? Many of the same establishments that offer eco-tours also offer equipment rental and instruction for any of these exciting water sports.

Here in Myrtle Beach, you’re sure to find many ways to explore the outdoors – whether it’s a relaxing stroll on the beach, a nature tour or an active day on the water or the golf course. It’s time to start planning your getaway today!
