Golf and the Great Outdoors in Charleston

Named a 2014 Traveler’s Choice winner on Trip Advisor, the charming, coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina offers beautiful beaches, breathtaking historic architecture, and a multitude of fun outdoor adventures and activities. Thanks to a variety of incredible golf courses to play, delicious dining and amazing scenery, this pedestrian-friendly city offers something for everyone.

Golfing on Luxurious Island Resorts

Kiawah Island Golf Resort combines elegance and nature. Ranked a top-10 resort for women by Links magazine and America's toughest course by Golf magazine, Kiawah Island Golf Resort had the honor of hosting the 2012 PGA Championship. The 18-hole course on this barrier island offers sweeping views of the ocean and due to first-class accommodations, restaurants and some of the best professional instruction around, this is a resort that is an absolute pleasure to visit and play on.

The Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms is another ideal destination to enjoy great courses or take a lesson at one of the area’s top golf schools.

Accommodations at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Along with the wonderful golf course, Kiawah Island Golf Resort has several accommodation options, including the five-star Sanctuary Hotel, which offers first-rate oceanfront rooms, along with a pool, fitness facility and spa. Or try one of the resort villas, where you can enjoy private and spacious condo living. With the beach at your doorstep, you can keep as busy as you like with water sports, wildlife watching and fishing, or just put your feet up and relax.

Strolling the Promenade: Shem Creek Park

While I was in Charleston, I knew I had to pay a visit to Shem Creek Park. I started with a tasty lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants and then headed to the promenade, where I happened upon a dolphin swimming past. This isn’t an unusual sight here, which is why you should get out on the water and explore the abundant ocean life in a kayak – alone or on a guided tour. There’s no better way to get a one-of-a-kind look at this unique coastal area.

Shopping and Dining in the Historic District

In addition to all the amazing outdoor activities Charleston offers, your trip wouldn’t be complete without enjoying the city’s numerous other draws. Charleston is known for having some of the most amazing cuisine in the country. Visit award-winning restaurants and enjoy fine dining and Southern favorites, such as shrimp and grits. King Street has everything imaginable to shop for, from apparel to electronics and antiques. Stop by the open-air market on Market Street for some locally handmade crafts and traditional culinary treats. Enjoy walking through the wide streets or take a carriage ride to view the impressive pre-Civil War homes.

With so many venues and activities to keep you having fun in the outdoors and enjoying nature at its finest, Charleston should be the choice for your next holiday.
