Boston, Massachusetts: Top Shopping Spots

By Vic Liang

Boston is one of the most walkable cities in the world, making it easy to indulge in one of my favourite activities when traveling: shopping. In my opinion, every vacation should have a day dedicated to retail therapy. In Boston, you can enjoy a wide range of shopping experiences. From luxury brands to antique shops, shopping malls to outlets, this fabled city has a dazzling variety of merchandise at attractive prices.

Famous Newbury Street

I first came to one of the most famous shopping districts, Newbury Street. It is located in Boston's Back Bay neighbourhood and known as the Rodeo Drive of the East, with a collection of fine art galleries, beauty salons and top designer shops. The most unique aspect is that these shops are located in Victorian red-brick buildings. Although the street and its buildings seem old-fashioned, they are all selling the latest and most fashionable merchandise.

Copley Square and Boylston Street

Copley Square is another requisite stop on your Boston shopping tour. Located among the Richardsonian Romanesque Trinity Church and IM Pei-designed modern skyscraper Hancock Tower, this is a true photo op of Boston's iconic attractions. Boylston Street, an east-west passage through Copley Square, brings together homes, shops, offices, cafes, Irish pubs and international cuisine restaurants, as well as one of the nation's largest Apple flagship stores. Along with the beautiful fountain, the Boston Public Library, the John Hancock Tower and other historically significant buildings in this area, Copley Square has a very vibrant atmosphere.

The Prudential Center and Copley Place

Along Boylston Street, you can also visit the Prudential Center, one of Boston's largest indoor shopping centres, to provide you the most comprehensive and comfortable indoor shopping environment. Go up to the 50th floor and you’ll be treated with an unbeatable view of the city. Across from the Prudential Shopping Center at Copley Place, luxury brand stores abound. Look for names such as Jimmy Choo, Burberry, Tiffany, Barney’s New York Warehouse, and many other famous stores, providing a one-stop luxury shopping experience.

Fantastic Outlet Shopping

If you’re like me, you may have only been window shopping at all of these upscale stops. For the more budget-conscious among us, you can buy designer and brand-name apparel for less at outlet shopping centres including Wrentham Village Premium Outlets and the Outlets at Assembly Row, not too far from the city centre. Wrentham Village Premium Outlets has more than 170 outlet stores and is easily accessed by tours and shuttle buses that depart from many hotels in downtown. I was very excited with the generous discounts they offered. I hopped from one store to another all day.

If one outlet mall doesn’t satisfy you, don’t worry. The Outlets at Assembly Row offers impressive discounts as well. I was most excited that apparel under $175 is tax-free while shopping in Massachusetts.

I hope you can follow in my footsteps and come to Boston, where a wide range of shopping amidst picturesque surroundings awaits!
