Shopping and Dining on Chicago’s North Shore

By Hitomi Farrell

Bordering downtown Chicago, Illinois, along Lake Michigan is a neighbourhood known as Chicago’s North Shore. Easily accessible via the city’s convenient trains, the area allows you to take take a break from the busy city with a variety of activities and amusements. With beautiful Lake Michigan alongside, I drove up Lake Shore Drive and visited Chicago’s North Shore to discover great shopping and dining. What a welcome change of pace from the big city!

Westfield Old Orchard

No matter the destination, shopping is a necessity for many travelers. A variety of spots on Chicago’s North Shore will fulfill your shopping needs, including Westfield Old Orchard. This mall has some of the biggest and best brands for both men and women. Some of the premium brands I found included Michael Kors, Lululemon, Rolex and Tiffany. I browsed and found some great stuff at some of the most desirable brand name retailers: Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdales, Anthropologie, J.Crew, Zara and Vans. Plus, it all came with the added bonus of unbelievable discount prices! With dozens more great stores, it really would have taken more than a day to do all of the shopping I wanted.

Dining on the North Shore

The areas I visited throughout Chicago’s North Shore all had many dining options. There was plenty of casual fare, world-inspired ethnic restaurants and even fabulous fine dining. I never ran out of satisfying options, and you won’t either. At Westfield Old Orchard mall, I enjoyed the popular Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen. I also took a break with a relaxing cup of tea at the wonderful tea shop called Teavana.

Of course, there is plenty of outstanding food to discover beyond the shopping areas. From bustling, popular pizzerias to vegetarian meals that even meat lovers will savor to incredible sushi, the menus here are so flavorful and varied.

Exploring the North Shore

When you’re ready from a break from shopping and dining, be sure to enjoy the scenic Lake Michigan waterfront beaches in Evanston and the stunning Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe. Chicago’s North Shore is also home to many cultural gems, including the Baha’i House of Worship and Illinois Holocaust Museum, both deeply meaningful experiences that I’ll treasure.

Being this close to downtown Chicago, it’s amazing that Chicago’s North Shore gives us this many options for world-class dining, shopping and culture, just outside of the big city.
