Wineries and Small-town Charm in Galena, Illinois
Beautiful Downtown Galena
Downtown Galena exudes an inviting charm. Galena´s Main Street is home to many historic buildings from the 19th century. Here you´ll find not only the historic DeSoto House Hotel (the oldest hotel in Illinois) and the second-oldest post office in all of America, but also an impressive number of fantastic restaurants, antiques shops and cozy bed and breakfast inns.
Rocky Waters Vineyard and Winery
The first winery I visit is Rocky Waters Vineyard and Winery in Hanover, where two friendly dogs and the owners greet me. I’m honored to be offered a tasting of their 14 wines. The tasting room is beautifully crafted with old wood, and the wines I tasted were wonderful. I especially savored the Pear Tree Blush, whose predominant peach note comes from the fact that the grapes grow near a big peach tree. The peaches aren‘t harvested in autumn; instead, they fall to the ground, infusing the grapes with this special peach flavor. Directly located on a small lake, the business also has a small cabin that you can rent for the night, so you can enjoy the surrounding nature and delicious wines for a little longer.
Galena Cellars Vineyard
At Galena Cellars Vineyard, the vistas are as amazing as the wines themselves. The prices for tours and tastings are very reasonable – I recommend doing both while you’re here. You might not immediately think of Illinois when thinking of high-quality vineyards, but everyone tasting the wines was as pleasantly surprised as I was at the quality and flavor. Some of these wines have won awards, and I saw some local residents buying multiple bottles of their favorite labels. Galena Cellars should definitely be on your list if you’re visiting wineries in the area.
Massbach Ridge Winery
All of the grapes used at this popular winery are estate grown, so tours are available during season (April through October) as weather permits. On a sunny day, you’ll enjoy a tour and expansive views of the 18 acres of beautiful scenery. Then, head inside for a generous tasting of some of Massbach’s wines, more than 15 in all. Massbach also has a tasting room in downtown Galena that is a convenient and welcoming place to sample local wine and soak up a great ambiance.
I would have loved to stay longer in Galena, this charming town in Illinois with its quaint downtown area and wonderful wineries!
