Visit Palm Beach, Florida’s Cultural Capital

By Renan Leahy

The Palm Beaches will surprise you. Yes, we are known for pristine beaches, outdoor adventures and great shopping, but what you might not know is we have world-class culture to match. We’re Florida’s Cultural Capital with more than 42,000 events each year from 200 of the world’s greatest art and cultural organizations.

The Flagler Museum

The name Flagler is everywhere here – on parks, boulevards and cultural centres. Henry Flagler, the man behind the name, can be considered the father of Palm Beach. The industrial giant, co-founder of the Standard Oil Company, found this place the ideal place to relax. He decided to build two of the most majestic hotels the region had ever seen and the railroad that connected the area to other cities, triggering the development of Palm Beach.

Here, Flagler also built his winter residence, described by the New York Herald at the time as “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.” The property, a National Historic Landmark, today houses the Flagler Museum. You can stroll through its corridors and rooms, see all the splendour of its rich architecture and décor and its impressive art collections, and even attend concerts and exhibitions of art and music.

The Morikami Museum, A Slice of Japan in Florida

On your trip to The Palm Beaches, you can dive into a culture from the other side of the world. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has been the centre of Japanese art and tradition in South Florida since 1977. It features unique and educational programs throughout the year, providing insight into traditional Japanese culture. You can watch a customary tea ceremony, listen to Japanese taiko drumming or simply spend time relaxing and rejuvenating while strolling the beautiful gardens and exploring Morikami’s renowned bonsai collection. Morikami’s galleries are a place of discovery on each visit, with rotating exhibitions that feature art and artefacts from the museum’s own collection as well as from private collectors.

The Society of the Four Arts

Be sure to visit some of the hundreds of cultural offerings from The Society of the Four Arts, a non-profit cultural organization established to encourage the cultural growth of the community. It includes a library, children’s library and peaceful sculpture and botanical gardens. You can view art exhibits, experience notable guest speakers, attend informational seminars or enjoy first-rate concerts throughout the year. Check out events such as children’s programs, films, lifelong learning, concerts, exhibitions and lectures. The site is the destination for Palm Beach fine arts, music, drama and literature. Plan your trip to this cultural paradise, and come enjoy an enriching vacation to Palm Beach County!
