Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Family Fun and Hot Springs

By Lynna Yee

Glenwood Springs in beautiful Colorado – named by Rand McNally and USA Today as the “Most Fun Town in America” in 2011– is home to the world’s largest hot springs pool and a variety of activities for the whole family. Have fun exploring the scenic beauty and rich natural history of Glenwood Springs.

World’s Largest Hot Springs Pool

I began my vacation with a dip in the world’s largest hot springs pool (400 feet x 100 feet). You can play, swim and soak in the mineral-rich water, which stays at a warm 90 degrees Fahrenheit all year round. I loved sitting on a bubble chair in the therapy pool, which is even warmer – 104 degrees Farenheit. There are also two water slides and a children's pool open in summer. As I relaxed in the healing, steamy water surrounded by a picturesque winter wonderland, I understood why Colorado is the perfect travel destination for all seasons.

Thrilling Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

For a change of pace, I enjoyed lots of thrills at Glenwood Caverns, a Western-themed adventure park perched on the side of Iron Mountain more than 2,000 metres up. The gondola ride up to the park offered breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Sopris, the Colorado River and Glenwood Springs. On the Alpine Coaster – the longest alpine roller coaster in Colorado – I wound through magnificent evergreen trees down the mountainside. Next I screamed my lungs out on Cliffhanger, the highest-elevation roller coaster in North America.

I then discovered a whole other world underground in the Fairy Caves, another park favourite. I felt humbled in the presence of these cave formations which are millions of years old.

The Colourful History of Glenwood Springs

I got glimpses into the town’s colourful past at the Glenwood Railroad Museum, located in the east wing of the historic Glenwood Springs Railroad Station, built in 1904. The museum features a large-scale live steam train model which can accommodate a child or a small adult. You can also explore the inside of a hundred-year-old “Speeder” (motorised track maintenance car) and browse other intriguing railroad memorabilia including a 1950s luxury passenger train dining set.

I learned more stories by visiting the memorial gravesite of the legendary Western gunfighter, gambler and dentist Doc Holliday, who died in Glenwood Springs in 1887. As you hike up the hill to the cemetery, which overlooks town, you’ll be treated to beautiful scenery.

Glenwood Adventure Segway Tour

Another way to explore Glenwood Springs is the Glenwood Adventure Segway Tour. Whether you choose an off-road adventure up the mountain or a tour of the charming downtown, the whole family will have a great time. After the tour, drop by Sweet Adventures for some scrumptious ice cream or fudge for a indulgent ending to a day of fun.

With so many things to see and so many fun activities, Glenwood Springs beckons you to “soak it all In.”
