Denver’s Many Attractions

By Paola Poucel

Good weather, interesting places to explore, art, culture, attractions and nightlife are all the elements of a memorable urban vacation. My husband and I found all of these and more in Denver.

Art and Fun in Downtown Denver

There is nothing better than starting the day with a walk, and Denver has one of the most interesting pedestrian urban centers in the United States. Its clean wide streets inspired us to marvel at the modern buildings and fascinating architecture of spaces like the Denver Art Museum, with its huge collection of Native American, European, Asian and Oceanic art.

Continuing our walk, we were surprised to find Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park, the only theme park in the United States located within an urban center. We enjoyed the rest of the day on its more of 53 attractions, at live shows and at the waterpark.

Attractions for the Whole Family

Although we do not have children, my husband and I are kids at heart and loved the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. We checked out dinosaurs, space exhibits, a planetarium and IMAX theater.

Continuing with the nature theme, we headed to the Denver Zoo. In this beautiful place we viewed exotic animals such as elephants, rhinos, zebras, and gorillas – over 3,500 different species! Most of them live outside of cages, so you can observe them in their natural habitat.

Having spent time with nature, it was time for my husband to choose the next activity, and, of course, we ended the day at Coors Field at a Rockies baseball game. Year round, there's an event somewhere in town for sports enthusiasts; Denver has seven professional sports teams.

A Day of Shopping and Culinary Delights

Our last day in Denver was all mine. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that the Cherry Creek Shopping District is located just a few minutes from downtown Denver. The whole morning was devoted to walking in more than the 160 stores of American brands, the largest concentration of stores between Chicago and San Francisco. We even enjoyed a relaxing massage in one of the spas.

We then decided to get some exercise, using the bicycle share program, B-cycle, located at different popular neighborhoods throughout the city. This was the perfect transportation to get to our next destination: Larimer Square.

Among its streets lined with historic buildings, we found a variety of boutique shops with unique items. Larimer Square has several nightclubs and a dozen of the best restaurants in Denver, like Rioja and TAG. As the afternoon faded away, we had dinner at TAG, where we enjoyed a sumptuous meal of Asian and Latin American fusion.

Nightlife with an Unforgettable View

We chose to end our day in the famous Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood, one of the liveliest areas of the city, where you can find cultural events, shows and numerous restaurants and bars. It was in one of these bars, The Tavern, where, with a beer in hand and the spectacular view of the mountains and Coors Field in sight, we said goodbye to wonderful Denver.
