Denver’s Arts and Culture Scene
By Idoia Gkikas
Stand at the Colorado State Capitol building and you’ll understand how Denver, Colorado, got its nickname as “The Mile High City.” This government building stands precisely 1,609 metres – that is one mile above sea level!
Denver is a welcoming city which offers something for nearly every visitor – from a vibrant arts scene and many walkable areas to gorgeous landscapes and sun-filled days (300 of them yearly, in fact). It is as laidback as it is eager to please... a perfect place to visit!
Golden Triangle Museum District
Plan a day in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District (GTMD), an area of arts and culture located at the South end of downtown. Within this area are eight of the city’s must-see museums. At the History Colorado Center, I learned how Colorado’s western past has shaped local character. The exhibits at this museum made me feel like I got to know the essence of the city.
Featuring jutting peaks and sharp angles like broken shards of glass, the structure which houses the Denver Art Museum is a work of art in itself. The museum holds an impressive collection of 70,000 art objects from around the world, including an American Indian art collection which represents the work of nearly every tribe across North America.
Other museums in the GTMD are the Byers-Evans House Museum, Denver Firefighters Museum, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, Molly Brown House Museum and Clyfford Still Museum. You’ll also find the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Denver Musicians Association, Colorado Ballet, Curious Theatre Company, Denver Public Library and the Art Hotel. In addition, this cultural centre has so much to offer: from art galleries and open studios to specialist stores, spas, coffee shops, bars and restaurants, all dedicated to “the art of living with art.”
Art District on Santa Fe
Denver's Art District on Santa Fe is another big arts centre in the city, with the largest concentration of art galleries in the state. Located just outside of downtown, this district has more than 60 galleries, shops and restaurants. For art aficionados, the galleries host Collector Preview Events every third Friday of the month, where you can meet the artists in person as you view their work.
First Friday Art Walk
The first Friday of every month is dedicated to the arts in Denver. Several cultural districts, including the Art District on Santa Fe, the GTMD, RINO (River North) and others, open their galleries, shops, bars and restaurants for a wonderful night of art. In the GTMD and Santa Fe, there are free shuttles that will take you from venue to venue.
Denver is an outdoor city with everything you need for an effortless urban adventure getaway, including a well-serviced international airport, making it easy to get here from anywhere in the world. Whether you visit during a cloudless summer or a picturesque winter, Denver is an amazing U.S. destination!
