Our Southern States Road Trip in Pictures

The Southern states treated us to more than we expected, which is saying something for a region that gave the world the gift of blues music.

The Discover America road trips crew joined French travel blogger Camille Malleroni on a route from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Tallahassee, Florida, that explored music, politics, natural wonders and a taste of Southern cuisine. Check out some of the incredible images from our journey.

It didn’t take long for Camille to sample some barbecue. We stopped at Stubby’s in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for pulled pork sandwiches, sweet tea and an assortment of side dishes.

Arkansas was hot. We found a great way to beat the heat. We took a pontoon boat out on Lake Hamilton for some high-speed tubing as well as relaxation.

The Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi, offers travelers lodging in authentic sharecropper shacks. The shacks have been updated with some modern amenities — indoor bathrooms, heating and air conditioning, TV and such — but still retain their history.

In Orange Beach, Alabama, just west of the Florida border, we rode personal water crafts. With the wind in our hair, surrounded by the waters of the bay, it was a cool, high-speed treat.

The views along the Gulf Coast are vast and spectacular. Here’s a different angle on life along the water in Orange Beach.

Across the border in Pensacola, Florida, we enjoyed a sunset session of stand-up paddle boarding, which served as a prelude to a more grounded Segway tour of the city’s historic downtown.

We loved listening to live blues at the Bradfordville Blues Club in Tallahassee, Florida. The ramshackle swampy venue made for a terrific setting to experience the region’s musical traditions.

Elsewhere in Tallahassee, Camille rose over 15 meters high as she zip-lined through a cypress swamp, part of our thrilling time with Tree to Tree Adventures at the Tallahassee Museum

Tallahassee is the state capital of Florida. We saw the capitol building, and like a lot of the places we saw on our Southern road trip, its grounds were lush and green and the skies were big and blue.

On one of our last adventures, we were able to explore those vast skies. We took a helicopter tour of Tallahassee and the surrounding areas with Tallahassee Helicopters. Here, Camille leans out the ’copter for an unobstructed view of the scenery.

Explore more of northern Florida’s natural wonders.
