The seaside gems of Delaware and Maryland

Another day, another series of waterfront awesomeness. The first leg of today’s adventure was a ride on a Cape May-Lewes Ferry across the Delaware Bay. We were with people on day trips and families on vacation who brought their cars along for the ride as we scoured the water for dolphins or whales. Guess what? We spotted both!

Since we’d heard that a favorite pastime along the Delaware shore was skimboarding, our first stop was at Alley-Oop Skim Shop. We had never tried skimboarding before, and we loved that it felt like the thrill of surfing but in the safety of the shallow shore. Some of us proved to be better at it than others, but we get points for trying, right? Our next stop was just a 20-minute drive to the beach town and boardwalk of Rehoboth. We found ourselves in a summer-lover’s playground of sun, sand, rides, watersports and, thankfully, food! Who knew falling off of a skimboard would stir up such an appetite? 

It was Grotto Pizza to the rescue where the debate quickly became “to vinegar or not to vinegar?” our French fries. Old Bay seasoning is the favorite condiment of some of the locals, while others swear by nothing but malt vinegar. We, of course, sampled both and much more. We were warned to save some appetite for our next stop and thankfully we did. The Ice Cream Store just a few blocks down the Boardwalk had over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream to choose from. African Vanilla with Bacon? Yes, please! 

As we drove south to Annapolis, we left the beach behind and started looking forward to spending some time in a new city. As soon as we arrived, we hopped onto an electronic eCruiser and took in some really cool historic landmarks. The United States Naval Academy was truly an inspiration and the Maryland State House, Governor’s Mansion and shops and galleries along Maryland Avenue proved why everyone who visits uses the word “quaint” when describing Annapolis. 

We’re learning that one doesn’t stay on land for long when exploring the Atlantic Coastline. So much of what there is to see involves ferries and water taxis and Annapolis was no exception. Watermark, which offers tours, charters and cruises, whisked us off for dinner at Carrol’s Creek Café at the Annapolis City Marina. As if our meal of crab, rockfish and baked Brie with berries wasn’t impressive enough, the continual parade of sailboats in and out of the docks was the perfect backdrop to another perfect day. Before we turned in for the night, we gave our artistic side a little workout at Annapolis Ice Cream. Known for serving half portions so that you can mix the flavors you like, they also encourage patrons to decorate their spoons for the growing wall display. We left our mark on Annapolis and it certainly left its mark on us. 

We spent the night in State House Circle at one of the Historic Inns of Annapolis, the Governor Calvert House. It was complete with period furniture from the 18th century and provided us with a quiet respite after such an incredible day.
