Niagara Falls has an extensive history dating back hundreds of years. The Falls were first discovered by French explorer Father Louis Hennepin in December 1678. The Niagara USA region soon became a French stronghold, as they built forts at the mouth of the Niagara River, which you can now explore modern-day Old Fort Niagara.
Niagara Falls USA offers a breathtaking look at one of nature’s marvels and an experience to last a lifetime. Over 75,750 gallons of water flow over the Falls each second, so it’s no wonder it attracts over 8 million visitors from around the world every year. Iconic views of the Falls can be seen in Niagara Falls State Park, America’s oldest state park. Established in 1885, it was designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
In Niagara USA, there is much more to do than just the Falls, making a visit to the region an even more enriching experience.
Just minutes from Niagara Falls is the Niagara Wine Trail where wineries produce grapes on vines that are over 100 years old. Hailed “the most cutting edge wine region in the country” by the New York Post, the Niagara Wine Trail is situated between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario where geography gives way to rich soil and a unique micro-climate, suitable for the production of grapes to make fine wines.
See 300 years of history at Old Fort Niagara, where one of the oldest surviving United States flags is permanently displayed. It was captured by the British during the War of 1812. The nearby charming Village of Lewiston was the site of the first battle of the War of 1812 and the last stop for slaves escaping to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
The original Flight of Five locks that were built in 1840 still exist along the Erie Canal in Lockport. Tour them on the Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises.
Surrounded by water, Niagara USA is a fishing mecca that offers exciting opportunities in and on Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and the Erie Canal. When it comes to the great outdoors, Niagara USA has it all, including an internationally-recognized “Important Bird Area” designated by the National Audubon Society. Endless hiking trails and a bike path that stretches across the state, along the historic Erie Canal, are just a few calls of the wild.
